Before invention of the magnetic compass, sailors used to find the directions . In what way is using a magnetic compass better?

Of course the magnetic compass is better . As the needle of magnetic compass is made up of magnet .the direction shown by the compass is surely correct rather than a mere guess. The stars and constilation were also used to find direction buts it's very difficult with the millions of stars present in the sky and remembering some of their positions.
