Before the breaking up of the pangaea at about 400-500 million years ago, india was a large island situated south of equator near the australian coast and separated from asia by a vast which sea.

The Tethys sea separated it from Asian landmass about 225 million years ago. When the Indian plate was moving towards Asian Plate, somewhere around 60 million years ago outpouring of lava occurred and Deccan Traps were formed. At that time the Indian landmass was still very close to equator.
