Johnsy was of the idea that she would die on the day that the last leaf would fall. Though her health could be maintained by medicines, she would never be able to recover if she didn't have the will to. Behrman knew this and felt like he should help Johnsy. This is the reason that Behrman painted the leaf on the ivy wall so that Johnsy would regain hope that if the leaf could survive in the storm, so could she survive her disease.
