Secularism
Religion and politics cannot go hand in hand. Secularism refers to the separation of religion from State power. It is important for a country to be secular in order to function as a democracy. There are cases wherein a religious group in charge of the government is dominating other religious groups. For example,
→ The Jewish state of Israel has numbers of Muslims and Christians. But they are often treated unequally.
→ In Sri Lanka, there were the Sinhalas. Since they had a belief in majoritarianism, they started dominating the Tamils by making their religion and language the official in the territory.
Indian Secularism
India is a country with a beautiful diversity of religions. There are Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims, Christians, Jains and Buddhists and many other religions in India. But at times there is discrimination between religions. And there is domination within communities too. Religious groups cannot truly coexist peacefully. There can still exist intra-religion domination. But there is always something that can be done.
As a leader of the country, these are the steps that would be taken to keep India a secular state:
- Country would not be ruled by one particular religion
People in the power cannot promote or favour a religion. It would be ensured that no one, including me, having access to State power has a close alliance with one religion.
- All religions will be treated equally
A person could not be refused employment by a religious group on religious grounds. The Constitution of India also states that no one can be judged on the basis of the religion they practice.
- Freedom of religion
Everyone has the right to practice a religion of their choice. Each person would be free to choose their own religion. Also, religious groups in minority would own the right to exist and practice their culture.
- Intra-religion domination
There are cases where Hindu women are denied entry in temple or lower caste people are treated unfairly. These are situations wherein members within a religion are being discriminated against by their own community. Inequality is not a fair practice. It would be made sure that the State is bound to intervene and put an end to the inequality by abolishing untouchability and gender discrimination.
