The poem ‘Benjamin Jones Goes Swimming’ teaches us that if we make up our mind for something, then nothing can stop us.
Here in the poem, Benjamin informs his wife that he would participate in a swimming competition and probably he can win the race.
But his wife is not sure of this as he had not gone for swimming for years. But at last overcoming all the obstacles, he won and his wife was in shock.
Benjamin Jones told his wife confidently that he would participate in the swimming competition held during the Free for All Meet on the fourth of July. He was confident of winning if he tried. His wife however felt that it was an absurd idea as Benjamin hadn’t swum for ages. She tried to dissuade him saying that because of this he would be the last while others raced past him. His wife also told him that she would end up blushing because of his loss.
The big day came and all swimmers took their positions ready to start while spectators thronged to see the sight. When the competition began, all contestants on Benjy’s left and right swam past him. He was so slow that a crab which saw Benjy’s toe could not resist the urge to bit it. As soon as the crab did so, the bite made Benjy took off like a possessed swimmer and win the race. His wife was so shocked that she fell into the lake with a splashing sound.
