Lord William Bentick (1774 - 1839) was the British Governor General in India, for the period 1828 to 1835.
Among the several social and educational reforms introduced by him, the famous ones were the reforms to abolish the practice of Sati and child marriages. A reform abolishing polygamy was introduced during his tenure in office.
He took strong steps and succeeded in completely wiping out the local bandits called 'Thugs', who used to terrorise the population.
