For the period 1828 to 1835, Lord
William Bentick (1774 - 1839) was the British Governor General in
India.
During his administration, he brought about several social and educational reforms which were beneficial to the Indians. The most notable among these reforms being the one to abolish the practice of Sati. Reforms banning child marriages and polygamy was also introduced during his adminsitration.
He took steps to smash the vicious local bandits called 'Thugs'.
The founding of Calcutta Medical College was another milestone during his administration.
