The Charter Act of 1833, providing extension of Royal charter given to East India Company by 20 years, by the Parliament of the United Kingdom is also known as The Saint Helena Act of  1833


The important points of the Act are as follows:


1. The Governor-General of Bengal was re-designated as Governor-General of India.


2. The Governors of Bombay and Madras lost their powers.


3. The Governor-General's Government was known as 'Government of India'. 


4. The activities of British East India Company came to an end, subsequent to this Act.


5. Open competitions were started for selection of government employees.
