Benzene is treated with methyl chloride in presence of anhydrous AlCl3 to give toulene. H-atom of benzene is replaced by CH3 in this reaction. HCl is formed as byproduct in this reaction. Hope this helped you clear all the doubts

Benzene is treated with methyl chloride bin the presence of  anhydrous alluminium chloride to get toulene

• Here H atom is replaced by CH3 in this reaction

• HCl is formed from this reaction as by broduct

• We can say benzene reacts with alkyl halides in the presence of alluminium chloride to form alkylbenzenes.
