Reaction of Benzaldehyde with KCN and Ethanol.

Benzaldehyde + KCN + Ethanol → Benzoin.

Benzoin + MnO2 or PCC → Benzil

1)The reaction of Benzaldehyde with KCN and Ethanol gives Benzoin which on further oxidation with a mild oxidising agent like MnO2 or PCC gives Benzil as product.

2)This reaction is known as Benzoin Condensation.

3)Here KCN is used as a catalyst and Ethanol provides the alcoholic medium required for the reaction.
