1.Western Political Thought by Brian Nelson: I have my graduation in non-Political Science background (Business Studies). This is the first book I got hold of to know the basics to a somewhat intermediate level of understanding on Western philosophers. The writer starts from Socrates, then touches Plato, Aristotle, in that order. The book has some of the best sections in Rousseau, Marx, and Machiavelli. It has a nice flow and is fun to read. You need to make notes for reproducing it on the question paper in your examination.
Plato to Marx by Subrata Mukherjee: I have glanced through the book once when I caught it in a bookstore near my house. The first thing you will notice is the easy language and for people who are not that adept and comfortable in the English language, this book is a gem.
A history of Political Theory by G.H. Sabine: This is an advanced level book for people who are really interested to deepen their understanding in Western Political Theory. There is a well-known thumb rule that Western Political Theory is best read by Western authors and Indian Political Theory by Indian authors.
