Answer:

Modernisation is a process through which a society transitions from being a rural, agriculture based traditional society to a more industrialized, urban , democratic and secular society.

One of the biggest causes of modernisation is SCIENTIFIC DEVELOPMENT. Take Europe for example - Europe started modernising with the advent of Industrial revolution. James Watt had just improved the Newcomen's steam engine and this single improvement completely revolutionized Europe. Mechanised textile industries began to appear in Lancashire. These factories needed labour. Thus, folks from countryside started pouring in Lancashire, giving rise to urbanisation.
