Bholi was a neglected child. As a child, she had fallen off the cot and had damaged a part of her brain because of which she was a slow learner and used to stammer. Moreover, she had pockmarks all over her face as she had smallpox when she was a baby. Because of this, her parents thought that Bholi would not be able to achieve anything.
Her parents used to constantly taunt her and caller a useless girl. Other people used to make fun of Bholi’s stammer and look. Bholi had 6 older siblings and they were all good looking and her parents always favored her siblings for this. All her sisters were married and her brothers were sent to the city to study.
Bholi was never given a bath nor was her hair combed and she never got new clothes. She had to wear the old clothes from her sister. But Bholi never complained. Finally, Bholi’s father wanted to get Bholi married and because he feared that no one would marry Bholi, he fixed Bholi’s marriage to a 50-year-old lame widower with grown-up children. Still, Bholi never complained and agreed to get married to that man for her parents’ happiness.
