Biodiversity sounds like a complicated term, but surprisingly, each one of us can do something about it. The common person can either help preserve the existing biodiversity or promote it. It is simpler than we think.

To begin with, any step that is environmental friendly, is a step towards preserving biodiversity. For example, if we save natural resources like trees, we will effectively be saving the habitat of  various species that are dependent on trees. Similarly all species require water for survival. The lesser the wastage of water, the lesser will be the shortage of water and the greater will be the chances of survival of many species.

Additionally, recycling, reusing and reducing waste goes a long way in saving biodiversity. The lesser waste produced, the lesser will be the levels of pollution in the environment. Thus, living organisms will get a cleaner environment to thrive in. It is a well-known fact that high pollution levels disturb the ecosystem and destroy biodiversity, both on land and in water.

If one is motivated enough to help promote biodiversity, the easiest way of doing that is by planting more trees and plants around your home. It will lead to greater pollination and increase the population of local varieties of plants and insect/ animal species. Planting and maintaining a kitchen garden is also a valid contribution.

Similarly supporting local growers by buying locally cultivated crops supports farmers financially and also makes the farmland area biodiverse. Further, buying local products reduces the transportation involved in the movement of goods across international and state borders, thus reducing carbon footprint and global warming. Since global warming is responsible for wiping out many species, any steps taken to reduce it will be counted as measures taken in favour of biodiversity.

Hence, it can be concluded that each time a person behaves in an eco-friendly manner, by putting the litter in a dustbin or saving electricity and paper, his actions indirectly help preserve biodiversity. One does not need to be a high-level biologist, zoologist or a scientist to contribute effectively. One simply needs to be an aware individual.
