The most important purpose of complement activation is to lyse the microbes that have entered into the host.

Complement activation leads to the lysis of bacterial, viral, fungal, protozoal, and many other cells through the membrane attack complexes.

However, cells such as cancer cells are more resistant to complement mediated lysis. Furthermore, many nucleated cells can endocytose the MACs into the cell so that the MACs don’t form the pores. Some nucleated cells can also repair the damage caused by the MACs.
