They use their intercostal and abdominal muscle for respiration.  During respiration their entire thoraco-abdominal cavities expands and contracts with the help of intercostal muscle  and abdominal muscle. Exhalation in birds are the active form of respiration.  Inhalation is caused by the relaxation of these muscles.
