Reaction of bleaching powder with air is given below -

  • Bleaching powder has chemical formula CaOCl2. The chemical is light yellowish in colour.
  • Bleaching powder reacts with carbon dioxide present in the air.
  • On reaction, the yielded products are calcium carbonate and chlorine gas.
  • The balanced chemical reaction is -
  • CaOCl2 + CO2 --> CaCO3 + Cl2.
  • In the above reaction, Ca refers to calcium, O refers to oxygen, C refers to carbon and Cl refers to chlorine.
