Correction, July 14,  This piece originally stated that Mumbai is still known as "Bambai" in India's national language, Hindi. The city's official name, regardless of language, is Mumbai.

March 1996 is the right answer.

In the year 1995 when Shiv Sena; a regional political party came into power, it changed the name of the state from Bombay to Mumbai. The main reason behind this was that the Shiv Sena regarded Bombay as a legacy of the colonial empire of Great Britain and thus wanted to change the name of the state; to reveal its Maratha heritage henceforth renaming it to give tribute to Mumbadevi a goddess. This state has become a part of the ongoing wave of changing the name of the cities given by the British or the colonial government.
