A boot sector virus is a type of virus that infects the boot sector of floppy disks or the Master Boot Record (MBR) of hard disks (some infect the boot sector of the hard disk instead of the MBR).

They infect a computer when it boots up or when it accesses the infected floppy disk in the floppy drive. i.e. Once a system is infected with a boot-sector virus, any non-write-protected disk accessed by this system will become infected. Examples of boot- sector viruses are Michelangelo and Stoned.

Boot sector viruses infect the boot sector or the partition table of a disk. Computer systems are typically infected by these viruses when started with infected floppy disks - the boot attempt does not have to be successful for the virus to infect the computer hard drive.
