Explanation:

Given how much water should be filled in a container 21 cm in height so that if it appears half filled when viewed from top of the container

  • Let h be the height of water filled in container.
  • We know that height of container is 21 cm, so apparent height of water viewed from
  • top will be 21 – x
  • Refractive index of the medium = real height / apparent height
  • We know that refractive index = 4/3
  • Real height = h
  • Apparent height = 21 – h
  • So 4/3 = h / 21 – h
  • 4(21 – h) = 3 h
  • 84 - 4h = 3 h
  • 7 h = 84
  • H = 84 / 7
  • H = 12 cm
  • So the height of water filled in container = 12 cm
