Note ;- Here “Sleep” in the past tense is “slept”.  “Slept” rhymes with swept . 

Hence the reason is that it was slept.

This riddle is tricky and funny though but I am happy that I have cracked it.

The answer is.......

Because the broom overswept.

Here swept is almost spelled like slept and it is as if the broom has slept for a long time.
