the chemical properties of carbon compounds are :

1) catenation or self linking property that helps carbon exist in many different forms and from big compounds

2) tetra valency : carbon has 4 valency and thus forms covalent bonds as donating 4 electrons would need a lot of energy and i cannot hold to 4 electrons if it receives 4 electrons

The physical and chemical properties of carbon depend on the crystalline structure of the element. Its density fluctuates from 2.25 g/cm³ (1.30 ounces/in³) for graphite and 3.51 g/cm³ (2.03 ounces/in³) for diamond. The melting point of graphite is 3500ºC (6332ºF) and the extrapolated boiling point is 4830ºC (8726ºF).

Examples include carbon oxides (CO and CO2), carbonates (e.g., CaCO3), oxalates (e.g., BaC2O4), carbon sulfides (e.g., carbon disulfide, CS2), carbon-nitrogen compounds (e.g., hydrogen cyanide, HCN), carbon halides, and carboranes.
