Why did Brazil start the ‘go west’ policy?

Portugal was expanding westwards when it first began settling Brazil; even though Portuguese settlement kept within a prudent distance of the coast for centuries, Brazil at its inception was the result of Portugal’s “go West” policy.

The early 17th century, however, saw the first inroads of Portuguese settlers into the Amazon, though here the model of occupation, given the hostile enviroinment of the Amazon Basin rivers and thick rainforests, was the settlement of nomadic and semi-nomadic native peoples into Carmelite and Jesuitic missions, forming communities whose main livelyhood was the trade in naturally-occuring spices and herbs.
While moderate exploration of the interior was at times financed by the Crown, the main push into the interior at this time was done by the Bandeirantes, whose private expeditions travelled far inland through the network of rivers of the Plata and Amazon basins, and whose slave raids had much of the interior all but scoured clean of human habitation save for a few entrepots established by Bandeirantes themselves.
