Breathing Is Rhythmic As It Occurs

due To Oscillatory Expansion And Contraction Of The diaphragm And Phrenic Muscles. Neural Impulses Are Responsible For This Control As They Communicate With The Respiratory Centres Of The Brain And the Intercoastal Muscles Of The Body.

The breathing cycle involves inhalation and exhalation of air. One inhalation and one exhalation makes one breathing cycle. When we breathe in the thoracic cavity expands and when we breathe out the thoracic cavity contracts. Thus breathing is a rhythmic process. But the gas inhaled reaches to each and every cell through blood. So the exchange of gases is a continuous process as it takes place between the blood and each and every cell, by diffusion.
