** The breathing cycle involves inhalation and exhalation of air due to alternate expansion and contraction of thoracic cavity. Thus it is a rhythmic process. But exchange of gases is a continuous process as it takes place between the blood and each and every cell, by diffusion.**

Respiration has two processes:

Breathing and exchange of gases.

While breathing is the regular inhaling and exhaling of air, exchange of gases is continuous in all cells.

In the breathing cycle air is first drawn in, separated and oxygen is diffused to the blood through the alveoli. This alveoli requires exchange of gases by diffusion. This exchange is mandatory for sir to be separated and used efficiently. Each of the cells also follow this diffusion exchange process concentrating the air that needs to be exhaled and inhaled.
