SOLUTION :

GIVEN

  • Brian saw some circus vehicles.
  • Brian saw 17 wheels in all.
  • 2 of the vehicles is car

TO DETERMINE

The number of bicycle and tricycle.

EVALUATION

Brian saw some circus vehicles.

Brian saw 17 wheels in all.

2 of the vehicles is car

Since each car has 4 wheels

So 2 cars have ( 2 × 4 ) = 8 wheels

So remaining ( 17 - 8 ) = 9 are of bicycle and tricycle

Now a bicycle and a tricycle has 2 & 3 wheels respectively

Let number of bicycle = x and the number of tricycle = y

So above information leads to equation

 \sf{ 2x + 3y = 9\: }

Now we will search for value of x & y in the Set of Whole numbers

The solutions is x = 3 , y = 1

Hence the number of bicycle = 3 and the number of tricycle = 1
