\huge{Carbon}

➡Carbon is a chemical element with symbol C and atomic number 6.

➡It is nonmetallic and tetravalent—making four electrons available to form covalent chemical bonds.

➡It belongs to group 14 of the periodic table.

➡Atomic mass: 12.0107 u

➡Atomic number: 6

\underline\bold{\huge{Carbon}}

☆ Carbon is non-metal whose atomic no. is 6 and atomic mass is approx 12.

☆ Usually all non-metals are insulator of electricity but an allotroph of carbon that is graphite is good conductor of electricity.

☆ It's valency is 4 (Tetravalency) and have self - linking property(catenation) due to which it forms a large number of compounds.

☆ Carbon always forms covalent Bond.

\underline\bold{\large{Carbon\:can\:be\:found}}

\underline\bold{\large{in\:two\:states:-}}

i) In free state :- Like Diamond, graphite and Buckminsterfullerene.

ii) In combined state :- Like Carbon dioxide gas in air , fossil fuel , wood, cotton , Fats proteins , carbonates(like marble , limestone and chalk).

\underline\bold{\LARGE{Allotrophes\:of\:carbon}}

There are mainly three allotrophes of carbon :-

i) \underline\bold{\large{Diamond:-}}It is a colourless transparent substance having extraordinary brilliance.

\underline\bold{\large{uses:-}}

●diamonds are used in cutting instruments like glass cutters , marble cutters and in rock drilling equipment.

● Diamonds are used for making jewellery.

ii) \underline\bold{\large{Graphite:-}}It is greyish-black Opaque substance.

\underline\bold{\large{Uses:-}}

● It is used as dry lubricant.

● It is used in making electrodes in dry cells.

● It is used in making 'pencil leads' .

iii) \underline\bold{\large{Buckminsterfullerene:-}}

it contains clusters of 60 carbon atoms join together to form sperical molecules.

\underline\bold{\large{NOTE:-}}It is still under investigation.
