The poverty in India has became the major obstacle in the way of development.It has given rise to many social problems.The main reasosn behind the poverty in India are: Low level of economic development. Demographic trends like high growth rate of population.

Coupled with caste system, poverty is the other biggest malaise afflicting our country's progress. While the country may be doing well in education, scientific research and in the field of industrial production, poverty is diluting our advancement. According to the World Bank's latest report, the highest number of poor people in the world live in India; in defining poor, the world body's experts took an earning of USD 1.9/day as the benchmark.
Instead of paying lip service, our politicians should tackle the issue of poverty on a war footing. If this cancer is removed in the next ten years, it would be of great service not only to the country but to humanity as well. Even today, it is unimaginable that the fruits of our progress does not reach the poor, that too 60 years after independence!
