brief note on ionic compounds
Answers
The compounds formed by the transfer of electrons from a metal to a non metal are known as ionic compounds or electrovalent compounds. There are four general properties of ionic compounds :
: Ionic compounds are generally brittle and break into pieces when pressure is applied they are somewhat heart due to the force of attraction of the positive and negative ions.
:Ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points as a considerable amount of energy is required to break the strong inter ionic attraction.
: Electrovalent compounds are soluble in water but insoluble in solvent such as kerosene petrol etc.
: The conduction of electricity through a solution involves the movement of charged particles. An ionic compound solution in water contains ions which move to the opposite electrodes when electricity is passed through the solution.

IONIC COMPOUNNDS :
* the compounds formed by ionic bond are called ionic compounds..
* they are held together by electrostatic forces, the compound is neutral overall, but consists of cations and anions
* cations which are positive, attracts anion which are negative, as a result of a new chemically stable compound called ionic compound..is formed
* Ionic compounds typically have high melting and boiling points, and are hard and brittle. As solids they are almost always electrically insulating, but when melted or dissolved they become highly conductive, because the ions are mobilized.
* Ionic compounds containing hydrogen ions (H⁺) are classified as acids, and those containing basic ions hydroxide (OH⁻) or oxide (O2⁻) are classified as bases. Ionic compounds without these ions are also known as salts and can be formed by acid–base reactions.
* Ionic compounds can also be produced from their constituent ions by evaporation of their solvent, precipitation, freezing, a solid-state reaction, or the electron transfer reaction of reactive metals with reactive no-metals, such as halogen gases.
