Rutherford took a very thin gold foil having a thickness of about 1000 atoms. He then hit the gold foil with a beam of alpha particles. he found that some of the rays went straight through, while some were slightly deflected but some rays had a huge deflection. The minimal deflection was expected by Rutherford, but the huge deflections made him discover the nucleus.
