Viruses are minute intracellular parasites that contain either RNA or DNA genome which is bounded by a protective and virus-coded protein coating.

Viruses can be seen as mobile genetic elements. They have a cellular origin and are characterized by a long co-evolution of virus and host. For propagation it depends on specialized host cells that can supply complex metabolic and biosynthetic machinery of eukaryotic or prokaryotic cells.

A complete virus particle is also known as a virion.
