Sound: it is a vibration which normally spreads as an audible wave of pressure, with the help of a transmission medium like gas, liquid or solid.
Perception of sound: perception of sound is different from the meaning that has been stated above. Sound has its use not only in Physics but also in psychology and physiology where the definition goes by the subject of perception by an individual brain. Psychoacoustics is dedicated to such a study. In ancient times, sound, according to Webster’s 1947 dictionary referred to an effect of mind. This meant, for example, if a tree falls in the forest and there is no one to hear it, then does it make a sound? According to the 1947, Webster dictionary, no, it doesn’t. But if you refer the dictionaries of today, the definition of sound is given as a physical effect. Therefore, the answer to the same question will be a yes in such a case. Well it does make sound but there is no one to hear it.

Psychoacoustics is the scientific study of sound perception and audiology – how humans perceive various sounds. More specifically, it is the branch of science studying the psychological and physiological responses associated with sound (including noise, speech and music). It can be further categorized as a branch of psychophysics. Psychoacoustics received its name from a field within psychology—i.e., recognition science—which deals with all kinds of human perceptions. It is an interdisciplinary field of many areas, including psychology, acoustics, electronic engineering, physics, biology, physiology, and computer science.[1]
