In 9th century the cholas again rose power and became most powerful and culture dynasty of India. From 850-1200 AD is considered the golden age of the Tamil culture. Rajaraj Chola and Rajendra Chola made the chola dynasty powerful.

Rajaraj chola defeated the pandyas and eastern chalukyas of vengi. Thew western chalykyas forced to make peace with him. He also subjugated kerala, ceylon and Maldives.

Rajendra chola defeated vengi, malaya and ceylon. He also defeated the kalinga and led to the expedition of the valley of ganga. The victories brought him the title of Gangai Kondan. He established a new capital Gangaikonda Cholapuram.

The administration of chola dynasty was divided into mandalas which were further divided into Nadus, Kottams, Kurram, and Garma were the lowest administrative bodies helped by assemblies known as Mahasabha. Towns and cities were administered by Nagarpatis.

The most remarkable contribution of the chola are the temples Rajarajesvara at Tanjor and Gangaikonda Cholesvare at Gangaikonda Cholapuram.
