The reasons for the the war of Independence or the Revolt of 1857
- The most important reason for the revolt of 1857 is the introduction of the Enfield Rifle. There was a rumour that the grease used in Cartridge of the rifle was made of fats of cow and pig and while loading the rifle the sepoys had to bite off the cartridge. Majority of the British army were Hindus and Muslims. The Hindus worship cows and for the Muslims the pigs were impure. Thus it hurt their religious sentiments.
- With the introduction of The Doctrine of Lapse and the Subsidiary alliance many Indian rulers lost their freedom and powers.
- The British East India company tried to reform the Indian society. There were many social evils in the society. The British abolished the Sati system in 1829 ant the widow remarriage was introduced , child marriage was stopped.These changes made by the British were not liked by the Orthodox Hindus.
