Landslides are slippery masses of rocks, earth or debris which move by force of their own weights  down mountain slopes or river banks. Landslides are major natural disaster in hilly terrains like the Himalayas western Ghats and in the north eastern parts of the country and  destroy life and property almost perennially and cause devastating damage to transportation and communication network.

STRUCTURAL MITIGATION:
Drainage Corrections: the most important triggering mechanism for mass movements is water infiltrating into the land area during heavy rains. Hence  the natural way of preventing  this situation is by reducing water infiltration and allowing excess water to move down without hindrance. Increasing vegetation cover is the cheapest and most effective way of arresting landslides. This helps to bind the top layer of the soil with layers below, while preventing excessive water run off and soil erosion.

NON STRUCTURAL MITIGATION:
Hazard mapping will locate areas prone to slope failures. This will permit to identify avoidance of areas for building settlements. Awareness Generations: The public should be educated about signs that a landslide is imminent so that personal safety measures may be taken and also gathering infromation or indigenous methods used to reduce the impact.

LandSlide➫ A mass of rock and earth moving suddenly & quickly down a steep slope.

♦ Water availability, quantity and quality can be affected by landslide.

♦ It caused when earthquakes occur on areas with steep slopes, many times the soil slips.

❱ Damage to land and loss of natural resources.

❱ It also block rivers and increase the risk of floods.

➧ Types of Landslide:-
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=⤵

[1] Rock Slides:-

❱ A landslide involving bedrock in which the rock that moves remains largely intact for at least a portion of the movement.

[2] Earth Slides:-

❱ A Soil Flow landslide where the majority of the soil materials are fine-grained & cohesive.

➧ Precautions of Landslides:-
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=⤵

❱ Stay away from the slide area.

❱ Stay alert and awake.

❱ If you are in areas susceptible to landslides consider leaving if it is safe to do so.

❱ Listen to local radio or television stations for the latest emergency information.

➧ Prevention of Landslides:-

❱ Directing surface water sources away from the landslides.

❱ Draining ground water streams away from the landslides.

❱ Minimizing irrigation on the surface of the soil.
