The full moon phase occurs when the Moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun, called opposition. ... The waning gibbous phase occurs between the full moon and third quarter phases. The last quarter moon (or a half moon) is when half of the lit portion of the Moon is visible after the waning gibbous phase.

Each lunar month begins with a new moon, followed three or four nights later by a waxing crescent (waxing means getting larger). About seven nights after the new moon, we see half of the moon's disk — a phase called the first quarter. Then comes a waxing gibbous moon, which is between half-full and full.
