Study of fossils enables scientists to learn a great deal about, not only the live form and appearance of the organisms, but also about the geosphere and the biosphere of the Earth at the time of that organism.
For example, dinosaur fossil study enabled scientists to learn a lot about their habits, habitats, ecological niche, etc. Specially, transition fossils are more appropriate to study, as they present the intermediate states of a fossil between the ancestral form and the recent form of the descendants.
