• Soil horizons different properties of colour and texture of the soil as well as structure and thickness of the horizon.

• The horizon unnamed using the letters O, A, E, B and C.

\textbf{\large{\underline{The O Horizon :}}}

• The O horizon is a layer of decomposing organic material on the surface of the soil.

• It is prominently found in areas where there is an accumulation of leaves and trucks fallen from the trees.

• It is dominant in forest areas.

\textbf{\large{\underline{The A Horizon :}}}

• The A - Horizon is the surface Horizon, it is also known as topsoil.

• It largely consists of sand, silt and clay.

• It shows presence of organic matter as well.

• This Horizon is predominant in the surface layer of soils in grasslands and agricultural lands.

• The top soil is absolutely essential for plant growth and is home to several insects, worms and microbes that is usually dark brown in colour.

\textbf{\large{\underline{The E Horizon :}}}

• The E - Horizon is a subsurface Horizon that is usually found between the A and B Horizons.

• It is you really devoid of any nutrients and mostly consists of sand and soil particles.

• The water percolated through the upper Horizon carries soluble minerals and nutrients to the B Horizon.

• Thus, the sub soil is rich in nutrients which is why the roots of the plants grow till the subsoil.

\textbf{\large{\underline{The C - Horizon : }}}

• The C - Horizon is the layer of loosely packed parent material.

• It is the least weathered horizon.

• Roots of a plant cannot penetrate this layer.

• The C - Horizon does not contain any organic material.

• The primary function of the C - Horizon is collection of rainwater percolating through the above layers.

• The water stored in C - Horizon as groundwater.
