With the end of the Cold War, that is to say after the break up of the Soviet Union into independent nations and the changing political scenario in Eastern Europe, more specifically with the adoption of democracy across countries, many internal conflicts broke out around the world. Consequently, there arose an increased demand for UN peacekeeping operations. In view of this, this world body started to challenge state sovereignty, non-intervention of internal affairs and non-use of force in peacekeeping operations. The situations in Rwanda, Somalia,Cambodia, Haiti, Somalia to name a few countries. So, it can safely be said, the UNO became a peace enforcer from a peacekeeper in the unipolar world.
