Role of Himalayas in determining the climate of India during the southwest monsoon season:

The Himalayas play a very vital role not only in blocking the cold dry winds from the Tibetan plateau and making it more inhabitable but they also play a vital role in the “southwest monsoon” season.

They do so by virtue of their altitude, their length and their direction; they effectively block the south west monsoon winds coming from the Mediterranean Sea and the “Indian Ocean from Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea” and condense in the form of downpour bringing rainfall to the northern plains.

The “Purvanchal” or the eastern extension of Himalayas also intercepts the winds from Bay of Bengal to give rain to north eastern India.
