There are three types of coal-
1.lignite- It is Brown to black in colour and woody form of coal .it can be easily mined .it has a high moisture content and less carbon content so it causes more pollution than other varieties of coal.
2.bituminous- it is also called the industrial coal or brown coal .it is dull black or blackish brown in colour with relatively higher percentage of carbon content .it is the mostly used coal.
3.anthracite- it is hard and Shiny with highest percentage of carbon content. it burns without much fumes ,so it is mainly used for smelting of metals.
