The British invaded India during 1600 AD and at that time Jehangir was the ruling Mughal emperor and at that time British came in as traders and started East India Company. The two annexations with which they established their rule in India are:

1. The Subsidiary Alliance : It was framed by Lord Wellesley, from 1798 to 1805 under which subsidiary alliances were formed in the country and so this made them establish their rule in India.

2. The Doctrine of Lapse: This was an annexation framed by Lord Dalhousie who was the Governor General of East India Company from 1848 - 1856. According to the doctrine, any princely state or territory under the direct influence of the British East India Company, as a vassal state under the British subsidiary system, would automatically be annexed if the ruler was either "manifestly incompetent or died without a male heir
