British wanted to grow opium to export to china?
Maj Gen Rambir Singh Mann It is said history does not repeat itself, but it rhymes. I was struck by the accuracy of this statement as I looked for parallels in history for our current drug crisis. We are grappling with serious drug abuse crisis and the source of drugs largely is the Golden Crescent, comprising Afghanistan and Pakistan besides Iran.China was wrecked by illegal opium trade sponsored by the British empire — it surreptitiously exported opium grown in India and sold it in China — in the 19th century. This opium trade led to two Opium Wars between the Chinese Qing empire and the British empire.

The British East India Company (EIC) began smuggling Indian opium to China and became the leading supplier of opium by 1773, overtaking the Portuguese. Its main aim was to correct trade imbalance heavily tilted in favour of China due to high British demand for Chinese silk, porcelain, tea and other products.
