When S Savithri first saw broccoli in her neighbourhood grocery store in Mogappair, she took it for a new variety of cauliflower and did not think twice before making her regular spicy veggie side dish with it. As continental vegetables like zucchini, cherry tomatoes, red cabbage and white onions are making an appearance on the shelves of smaller grocery shops, many are picking it up out of curiosity and giving it an Indian twist, coming up with dishes like broccoli pakoda and sambhar with zucchini.
While some whip up dishes with the right combinations, preserving the natural taste of these veggies, others learn it the hard way. "I tried using cherry tomatoes in rasam and zucchini and capsicum in khichdi, but both dishes did not work out satisfactorily. The tomatoes made the rasam sweet and the combination of vegetables in the khichdi did not go well," says Uma Nakkeran of Arumbakkam.
