The most common form of Buddhism that us westerners know about is Zen Buddhism, which does not reference a deity. It would be atheistic if it stated there are no deities, but it does not. An atheist can practice Zen Buddhism easily due to the lack of gods in it's principals, but this does not make Buddhism atheistic.
Also there are other denominations of Buddhism, lesser known, which do deal with and worship gods, mostly of the animal variety.
So the premise that it is atheistic if false.

May be it has no god concept or deity. they consider Sidharth Gautama Buddha as their god.But we can't consider them as complete atheist.
So any one can follow Buddhism because it is more than a religion without any particular deity or god
