  • Initial Velocity of the bullet = v
  • Initial Velocity of the block = 0
  • Final Velocity of the bullet and block system = V = ?

According to Conservation of Linear Momentum,

Initial Momentum = Final Momentum

In this case, Initial Momentum is given as:

⇒ mv + M ( 0 )

⇒ mv

Final Momentum is given as:

⇒ ( m + M ) V

Substituting in the equation we get,

⇒ mv = ( m + M ) V

⇒ V = mv / ( m + M )

Therefore the velocity of the system ( V ) is [ mv/( m + M ) ].
