The speaker says these lines while the meeting with Helen who had been secretly telling him plots for his ghost stories. On his first meeting he thought that if she was the one who told him his plots, the ghosts in his stories should have been similar to her. But as we all know that the ghosts in the ghost stories are not some human shaped translucent beings, the narrator enquired her. On which she replied that if the ghosts had been similar to her the readers wouldn't believe in them.
