This expression ‘But our respite was short lived’ is from the chapter ‘We Are Not Afraid to Die…if We Can All Be Together’ by Gordon Cook and Alan East.

In this expression the author/s are narrating their terrifying experience with the storm in the Southern Indian Ocean. On January 2 their boat, Wavewalker was badly damaged by a colossal wave; they had to work very hard to  save it from drowning. On January 4, they succeeded in bringing the water level in the boat down through incessant pumping. It appeared the boat would make it to any nearest country and they would be safe.

However, on January 4 the weather again became rough. Wind began to blow at 40 knots and the waves began to rise. By the dawn of January 5, it appeared the storm would strike again. And if the storm rose, they would definitely sink.

The expression ‘But our respite was short lived’ means their hope that they would reach any nearest country was just short-lived.

Answer:

After continuous pumping out water they reached the last few centimetres of water. And they only had to keep pace with the water still coming in. They hoisted the storm jib and headed for where the narrator thought the two islands were. They also had their first meal in two days.

But at 4 pm that day black clouds again began to build up and within a hour the speed of wind was 40 knots and the sea was getting higher. The weather continued to deteriorate throughout the night, and by the dawn of January 5th their situation was again desperate.
