butyl bromide has two parts butyl ion which is positively charged and bromide part which is negatively charged. So when this compound is reacted with NaCN it undergoes nucleophilic substitution reaction in which nucleophile of reactant get exchanged to form a new compound as product. Nucleophile is negatively charged species. So CN- ion gets exchanged with Br- ion via nucleophilic substitution. HOPE IT HELPS
