Given Equation is y^2 - 2y + 24 = 0

= > y^2 - 2y + 24 + (1)^2 - (1)^2 = 0

= > y^2 - 2y + 1 + 24 - 1 = 0

= > (y - 1)^2 = -24 + 1

= > (y - 1)^2 = -23.

Now,

(1)

= \ \textgreater \  y - 1 = - \sqrt{23}

= \ \textgreater \  y - 1 =  \sqrt{23} i

= \ \textgreater \  y =  \sqrt{23} i + 1

= \ \textgreater \  y = 1 +  \sqrt{23} i

(2)

= \ \textgreater \  y - 1 = - \sqrt{-23}

= \ \textgreater \  y - 1 = - \sqrt{23} i

= \ \textgreater \  y = 1 -  \sqrt{23} i

Hope this helps!
